Philosophical Rambling

A quest for elusive answers to a few vexing questions, but with digressions aplenty!

Cricket Squared

The game of cricket has a few drawbacks. CRICKET SQUARED is my attempt to eliminate these drawbacks, and make the game more interesting and fair.

Drawbacks of cricket

(1) It is not fair that luck (winning the toss) should play a part in deciding the winners of any match. Often the team winning the toss holds an unfair advantage as they are able to choose between batting or bowling depending on the conditions.
(2) Cricket is not a ‘symmetrical’ game. For example the team batting first wins by x runs, while the team batting second wins by y wickets.
(3) In the first half of a match it is impossible to make a comparison between the two sides, and say who is ahead.
(4) There is no effective way to recalculate the target of a team in a rain-affected match. (Duckworth /Lewis method is nonsense!!)

Changes introduced in CRICKET SQUARED

***   Let both teams bat together at the same time!!. The bowlers and fielders of both the teams assemble on the ground at the same time along with the four batsmen (two from each side). Team A bats the first ball of their innings, when Team B bowlers and fielders are active and Team A bowlers and fielders keep out of the way. Team B bats next (first ball of their innings) when Team A bowlers and fielders are active and Team B bowlers and fielders keep out of the way. The match progresses as Team A and B bat on alternate balls. (At the half-way stage each team would have batted 25 overs).

***   The match goes on until one of the team gets bowled out and the other has scored more runs, or until the completion of all 100 overs, at the end of which the team scoring more runs wins!!

***   Each team will consist of 17 players ( 8 batsmen, 5 bowlers, 1 wk, 3 all rounders ). The wk will not bat (has to keep for the entire day). The players classified as batsmen and bowlers will ONLY bat and bowl respectively while the all rounders are allowed to bat and bowl.

***   5 bowlers, 2 batsmen and wk of each team will be on the field. The remaining 5 fielders required can be any combination of the remaining ( 8 – 2 = 6 ) 6 batsmen and 3 all rounders. (4 players will always be free, who can get ready to bat next).

Advantages of  CRICKET SQUARED

(1) Both teams will be playing under similar conditions.
(2) Victory margin will always be runs (makes the game ‘symmetrical’)
(3) Constant comparison and knowledge on which team is leading.
(4) No need to recalculate targets!! The team leading when the rain arrives will win.
(5) More of quality cricket, as specialist batsmen face specialist bowlers.
(6) Puts pressure on batsmen of both sides, not just the chasers.
And lots more…….

Feel like laughing?

Laugh all you want. Anyway, give it a thought. Just imagine a situation where the cricket field has 4 batsmen and 22 fielders!!!
